You have probably been living in a cave without internet connection for a year if you do not know who Hari Nef is. In Hollywood and beyond, the trans actor, model, and most recently, Barbie cast member, has been making headlines.
Even though Nef is not yet well-known, millions of people are watching her closely since she first appeared in Barbie as a doctor and assisted Ken (Ryan Gosling) in recovering from a surfing injury.
Nef posted a letter she sent to writer/director Greta Gerwig about what it meant to her as a trans woman to be cast in Barbie after a promotional poster with Dr. Barbie was revealed. She said: "Barbie's the standard; she is The Girl; she is surely THE doll." A few years ago, my pals and I—well, my other transgender girlfriends and I—began referring to ourselves as "the dolls."
Perhaps it is an attempt to validate our femininity, to grin and mock the expectations placed on us as women. Despite everything we know we are, never will be, and want to be, we refer to ourselves as "the dolls." We shout the word because it is important. Barbie is the most important doll.
